The prototype was designed at the Talyllyn Railway Pendre works, and built using parts from a 1948 Barclay 3' gauge locomotive as well as many new items. The project took over 20 years to complete and the loco entered service in 1991 as No.7, TOM ROLT. It is named after the transport history and engineering author, L. T. C. Rolt who inspired the rescue of the Talyllyn Railway by volunteers and was the TR's first general manager after preservation.
In the last 19 years, the loco has undergone a number of minor changes and our model is based on the engine as originally built.

Technical specifications for Tom Rolt

  • 0-4-2 inside framed chassis with two double acting slide valve cylinders operated by simplified Walschaerts valve gear.
  • Internal gas firing using our 'FG' type burner.
  • Controls fitted as standard are :- steam regulator, safety valve, pressure gauge, displacement lubricator, water gauge, gas regulator and reversing gear.
  • Water gauge and top-up system fitted as standard.
  • Dimensions are :- length (over buffers) 300mm, width 98mm, height 136mm, weight 2.75kg ( with r/c).

  • Supplied with both standard Roundhouse center buffers plus, hook coupling and buffers as per Talyllyn railway (as illustrated).
  • Insulated wheels fitted as standard.
  • Available in any standard Roundhouse colour. By popular request a new colour, Deep Bronze Green, has been added to the Roundhouse range of standard colours. We are told that this is close to the correct livery for this model. The loco in the picture is painted in Gamboge.

The Campbeltown & Machrihanish Light Railway was a 2' 3" gauge line that ran six miles across the Kintyre Peninsular on Scotland's west coast. It was built originally to carry coal from the mines to the port of Campbeltown and later, goods and passenger traffic were added. The railway had five locomotives over its 26 year history, the first three being small 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 engines. In 1906, Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. built a new 0-6-2 side tank locomotive for the line named 'Argyll' and the following year, a sister engine named 'Atlantic'. These were pretty large engines by narrow gauge standards and were an impressive sight in their Gamboge livery, hauling the elaborate balcony ended, panelled bogie coaches. Both loco's operated up to the closing of the railway and were finally cut up in 1935.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is probably one of the most famous narrow gauge railways in the world. Situated in India, this engineering masterpiece which rises a total of 6,850 feet over it's 50 mile length, was constructed between 1878 and 1881. The railways main motive power were the well known class 'B' 0-4-0 well tank/saddle tank engines designed by Sharp Stewart & Co of Glasgow. Between 1889 and 1929 the DHR purchased a total of 33 of this class of locomotive from Sharp Stewart, North British Locomotive Co and Baldwin Locomotive Works as well as building 3 in it's own workshops, and locomotives dating back to 1892 are still in use today.

The Roundhouse class 'B' is typical of the locomotives that are currently in operation on the railway and features a wealth of detail to augment the legendary Roundhouse performance and reliability.

Stock due April 2011.

The Vale of Rheidol Light Railway is one of the best known British narrow gauge railways and is still in operation today. Situated in Wales, this spectacular railway runs from Aberystwyth on the coast of Cardigan Bay, to Devils Bridge, some twelve miles inland.
It opened in 1902, initially for the conveyance of lead ore, from the mines up in the hills to the standard gauge railway interchange and harbour in Aberystwyth.
Over the years, it has been operated by the Cambrian Railway, the Great Western Railway, British Railways and private companies and it's locomotives have appeared in many different liveries.

The Roundhouse model is of the post Swindon version of the three locomotives that are currently in operation on the railway and features a wealth of detail to augment the legendary Roundhouse performance and reliability.
Standard features include a fully sprung chassis, water top up system, fully integrated radio control system and we even supply a full set of etched brass name and number plates (7 - Owain Glyndwr, 8 - Llywelyn and 9 - Prince of Wales) plus a set of fire irons/shovels.

  • 2-6-2 outside framed chassis with two double acting slide valve cylinders operated by a simplified Walschaerts type valve gear.
  • Fully sprung chassis.
  • Internal gas firing using the
  • ROUNDHOUSE 'FG' gas system.
  • Hinge up cab roof for easy access to cab fittings.
  • Controls fitted as standard are :- steam regulator, safety valve, pressure gauge, displacement lubricator, gas regulator and reversing gear.
  • Water gauge and boiler top up system fitted as standard.
  • 32mm and 45mm gauge.
Dimensions are :- length 380mm, width 135mm, height 145mm, weight 5.3 Kg (with optional extras fitted).
  • Full radio control for both regulator and reversing valve gear, using multi channel Planet 2.4GHz equipment.
  • Insulated wheels.
  • Available in any standard ROUNDHOUSE colour.
The following items can be factory fitted to further enhance your operating pleasure.
  • Radio controlled drain cocks. £93 extra.
This feature adds an extra valve between the cylinders so that you can divert the cylinder exhaust either up the chimney as normal, or out from below the cylinders. When set for the latter, the exhaust exits from a small pipe, pointing forward, below each cylinder, not only simulating proper cylinder drain cocks, but also sending condensate down to the track side. This function is controlled from the hand held transmitter.
  • Radio controlled steam whistle. £133 extra.
A real working steam whistle that you can operate from the hand held transmitter at any time when the loco has steam pressure.
Please note that this model is not available with manual control.
